Title: Flunked
Author: Jen Calonita
Pages: 242
Blurb in the Book:
Gilly wouldn't call herself wicked, exactly...but when you have five little brothers and sisters and live in a rundown boot, you have to get creative to make ends meet. Gilly's a pretty good thief (if she does say so herself). Until she gets caught. Gilly's sentenced to three months at FairyTale Reform School- where all of the teachers are former (super-scary) villains like the Big Bad Wolf, the Evil Queen, and Cinderella's Wicked Stepmother. Harsh. But when she meets fellow students Jax and Kayla, she learns there's more to this school than its heroic mission. There's a battle brewing and Gilly has to wonder just how good these bad guys are.
My Review:
Ooh, this book was good! First of all, the FTRS (FairyTale Reform School). I can't even express what a great idea that was!!! Turning the bad guys good, and having them teach possible future bad guys not to follow in their footsteps- genius. I've read a lot of fractured fairy tales, and none of them have ever taken that approach. Next, the main character, Gilly. She had such a fierce love for her younger siblings, and it was so heartwarming to read! When she stole things, she only did it so they would have a better life, not for her own personal gain. Gilly was (is?) an all-around great person. And a great character! I wasn't ever exasperated or irritated or even bored with her. She always kept me on my toes and changed around. Yay, Gilly! Plus, this story was amazingly well written. IT WAS WRITTEN IN PRESENT TENSE!! I always write in present tense and for some reason the books I read never do. It was very refreshing to have a story written like that. Ahhh. ;-) I really can't think of any criticism for this book...and I'm not going to try! How about we just award it 5 stars, because that's what it deserves? :-)
