Hi everyone! I'm here today for a short and unexpected post, but I feel that it's necessary you read it if you are a frequent reader because this would change the experience here on Writer's Digest a little bit. Lately I've been considering (and it was pointed out to me) that my web address, www.writersdigestbyolivia.weebly.com, is long. And when it's long, you don't want to type it in. Or you type in one letter wrong and end up with the-- That's actually a screenshot of the computer I'm working on now. I really did type in my web address with one letter missing- and this is what came up. So I feel like I need to change my blog name. On the last post, I had a survey and found out that the feeling is shared- a few other people also mentioned they think I should change it. You can take that survey by clicking here. But I don't want it to be the sort of thing I do overnight, because a site address that is going to change the name of the blog deserves lots of thought until the perfect name is found. Side note: I want the new name to be centered around books, reading, that sort of thing, because Writer's Digest makes me feel pressured to only post about writing, and that's not what I always want to do. Occasionally, yes I do love to read your writing or give tips, but it should be something I want to do, not something I do because I feel like I have to. I also want the name to be simple and relatively short, as one of the main points is that my current name is too difficult to type in. Unfortunately I cannot take off the .weebly.com part at the end, since I don't own a "domain," which would allow me to end my address with a .com. The reason why I'm having this long and incredibly serious rant (no exclamation points? seriously Olivia?) is because I want your input. You are the ones who read my blog! The name should be something you enjoy, think fits the posts, want to type in, something you tell your friends about. If you have any suggestions I would love to hear from in the comments. Actually I would love to hear from you even if you don't have a suggestion, because anything you can say at this point will help. Thanks for reading and understanding where I'm coming from (if you do).

Welcome to January's edition of Writer's Digest! In case you didn't know, that's the series I've been doing about writing on the second Tuesday of each month, starting in October. You can click here, here, and here to read my other ones. :-) The purpose for this series? It's that simple. ON TO THE THICK OF THE POST! 1.) If I didn't write, I would spend way too much time watching TV. When I think about all the time I spend writing (whether it's a story or a blog post) I would have hours and hours and hours of free time. It sounds good, but it would also scare me to have that much freedom. Plus, I might turn into a couch potato from staring at the TV screen all day. 2.) If I didn't write, I wouldn't have some of the friends I do. I got to know a lot of people better in my ILA class and a writing club last year at school that wouldn't have ever really talked to if we hadn't both loved to write (and read). That would be sad... 3.) If I didn't write, I would not be able to think straight. There are so many ideas and characters and plots percolating in my head at all times. If I didn't write....I shiver to think of what would happen inside my brain. Probably, my characters would start a revolution against me. 4.) If I didn't write, there would be three empty drawers in my desk! Two of them hold my extensive collection of journals, and the other is stuffed with notebook paper filled with stories and words. 5) If I didn't write, I wouldn't know what to do. What would my calling be? Reading? Dancing? Art? Singing? Music? 6.) If I didn't write, this blog post wouldn't exist. End of story. I hope everyone liked this post and reading it! Please comment below what would happen if you didn't write...Maybe you don't like writing. It's fine! Just pick something you couldn't exactly live without and then tell us what would happen if you couldn't do it. See you soon!
-Olivia Hello everyone! Welcome to the 3rd section of my writing series, Writer's Digest! Sadly, this is exactly a week late, but let's just pretend nobody ever noticed. ;-) (Did you) Today we're going to be talking about how I write, having already covered why I write and where I write. (Click here and here to read those posts, if you missed them.) Once again, if you have a blog, I encourage you to also do a how I write post, and if you don't then that's what the comments are for. :-) Let's begin!! Hope you enjoyed that random picture! 1.) I write short stories. And when I say short, I mean short. Not like the "short" stories in books, where they're like a whole chapter long. Short for me means I pack a beginning, middle, and end into one or two pages. Well, sometimes more. At the beginning of the year in English, we were supposed to write a "lost chapter" for the book we read over summer vacation. Well. I wrote four pages. Um, most people in my class wrote a paragraph. It was slightly awkward. 2.) I write really short novels. You know- they aren't that short, but they also aren't any more than ten pages. And they're always in progress. I'm not very good at making my stories end... 3.) I write diary entries, fake and real. Well, mostly they're fake because I'm terrible at good habits. That's why sometimes there'll be a month break between blog posts and other times like a day. I love to write fake diary entries about different time periods, specifically during wars because there's factual information I can sneak in there as well. 4.) I write tiny snippets of dialogue that I might use someday. Sometimes as I'm lying (lying? laying?) in bed, something will hit me. Maybe it's a sentence, maybe it's five, but it's always something that I know I'll forget if I don't write it then and there. So I turn on my lamp, jump out of the warm, cozy covers and scamper over to my desk and scribble it down. Who knows? Maybe that tidbit about Phillip will help me someday. 5.) I write blog posts. Obviously. This is a blog post. I write others. I post them. You read them. 6.) I write poems. Okay, poetry isn't really my thing. I'm just not the rhyme-y type, but I do enjoy free verse. I love to just say whatever I want and be able to switch lines whenever. Maybe there's some sort of rule about that, but if there is, I don't follow them. The person that's really good at poetry is Anna- ask her if you need help! 7.) I write random character ideas. So many people have suggested this to me- you pick a random name and then write everything you know about them off the top of your head. It really helps when you need a main character because you can just spill out anything and everything! I hope you liked this post, even thought it was COUGH COUGH late COUGH COUGH. Anyhow, see you! Christmas posts are being cooked up as you read.... -Olivia Welcome to November's edition of Writer's Digest! In case you missed my first post in this series, just click here to catch up on that. THIS WAS A CLOSE ONE. I almost didn't do this post in time! But I caught myself at 8:51 Monday night (present time for me) and remembered! As I said in my last Writer's Digest post, I'd love to hear from you! Blog post, comment, whatever. It's fun to hear what others think! :-)
1.) I write on my bed. This one doesn't really require much information. As long as you know what a bed is (it's the thing you sleep on) it's pretty self explanatory. Basically, my bed is a comfortable spot with many stuffed animals, blankets and pillows, and I love it. I rest my case! 2.) I write in the car. All those long road trips...my family goes to Alabama every year, and then we always go visit my grandma and then just around the state. There's so much to time to write when you're stuck in a vehicle, Truthfully, I prefer to type when in a car, because when it's so bumpy I find it hard to keep my pencil on the page, but same thing. 3.) I write in an armchair. Being curled up a nice comfy armchair with the soft glow of a lamp behind you, and maybe your dog curled up at your feet (add in some hot chocolate) and IT'S PERFECT. 4.) I write at Anna's house. First of all, click here to read the post STARRING ANNA. Second of all...well, never mind. I can't really do a link to all the posts she's ever been in because I mention her in about every one. Anyway, we always write stories with each other, share, and challenge each other to do things that are outside of our comfort zone. (cough cough FANTASY) 5.) I write in my head. It's true. Do you ever like write novels inside your head with an amazing plot and characters and you have it all planned out? If you do, SAME. That is what I do when I can't fall asleep at night. :-) (Usually I never end up writing them.) 6.) I write wherever I am. Wherever I am, if inspiration strikes, I have to write. It doesn't matter how much- maybe a little tidbit like "paintings that come alive" or as much as a page. Now, usually it's not that much because you can't just sit down in the middle of Target and write a novel, but it could happen. 7.) I write in my phone. The Notes app? (Comes with all Apple devices.) It's a LIFESAVER. Kind of like in the above one, it helps you get down your thoughts anywhere and everywhere. The Microsoft Word app? Just as awesomemated. Hope you enjoyed! This series has been really fun for me to write- it's like a brain dump about everything I love about writing. And I get to share it with you! Don't forget- I want to hear from you! SEE YOU! THANKS FOR READING! -Olivia Hey guys! Today I'm going to be starting a new series named after my blog- Writer's Digest- because I don't do enough posts about writing! My first one is going to be called Why I Write, because I've been thinking about it and suddenly realized how many reasons there are! If you have a blog, then I encourage you to do a Why I Write post! If not, then just let me know in the comments. I love hearing from you guys! :-) Before we begin, I just wanted to share something exciting- over the past week, I met two authors! YES, TWO! Squeeeeeeee! There will be about that in a post to come....ANYWAY. On to the real post! 1.) I write because it's a way to have the things I wish for. That sounds kind of weird or cliche, but it's true. I've always wanted to have a bunch of siblings- and if I give one of my characters a lot of brothers and sisters, it's like a little part of me now has the siblings I wanted. (Not that you aren't awesome, Carter. I just want more!) I've always had a dream (a farfetched, never to happen dream) to be a gymnast, and if I make one of my characters a gymnast- now I'm one too! 2.) I write to reach the goals I've set for myself. Ever since I was little, I remember wanting to see my name on the spine of a book. I would look at my bookshelf, see all the names, and think that someday I might be able to have a shelf of books all with MY name on them. 3.) I write to escape into a different world. Once again, super cliche, but super true. When you read, you get to go into a different world, and when you write, you get to CREATE a world. How cool is that? Even if you don't think of yourself as a "writer," I bet you still love disappearing into another place. Imagine doing that with your own world! 4.) I write because I want to give to others. This is sort of the same as the one above...So many authors have made amazing places that I've spent a lot of my childhood in, and it would be so awesome to be that person how gave a kid that escape. 5.) I write because it makes me happy! I believe the things you choose to do should make you feel confident and good about yourself. Writing makes me feel that way, so I do it! 6.) I write because I don't have to be an author to do it. I'm not a published author. I hope to somebody be one, but if I'm not, it doesn't mean I can't be a writer. When I write, it doesn't have to be for money, or it doesn't even have to be good. It just has to be for me. 7.) I write because I love it. When you do something and it gives you that tingly feeling you get when you're excited and happy, then you know you love it. When you think about all the time, you know you love it. When you look forward to it and make up your own fantasies in your head, you love it. And that's how I feel about writing. And those are my reasons! I hope you enjoyed this, because this was REALLY fun to write! I can't wait for the next second Tuesday of the month, because I'm so excited to do another post in this series. See ya around, and don't forget to comment!
