Blurb From the Flap (it's a hardcover from the library):
"See that girl, the one with the bright red hair, overstuffed backpack, and aura of grumpiness? That's Charlotte Mielswetzski. And something extraordinary is about to happen to her. Oh, it's not the very cute kitten that appears out of nowhere and demands to go home with her. It's not the sudden arrival of her cousin, Zee, who believes he's the cause of a mysterious sickness that has struck his friends back in England. It's not her creepy English teacher, Mr. Metos, who takes his mythology lessons just a little too seriously. And it's not the white-faced, yellow-eyed men in tuxedos, who follow Charlotte everywhere.
Okay, I didn't type the whole thing. But it goes on for a really long time, and I don't want to accidentally ruin anything. Besides, that kind of leaves you on a cliffhanger: what is the extraordinary thing that is going to happen to Charlotte? (Da da daaaaaa!)
My Review:
I'll have to admit, this book is pretty scary. Like, once I tried to read it before bed. Not such a good idea. It was really hard to sleep that night. Also, I was reading it for a school sci-fi project. My best friend recommended it to me (thanks, Anna!) and although I liked it way more than I expected, the scariness got to me a little. It isn't violent scary, just oh-my-gosh-is-there-someone-following-me scary. Don't let the frightningness (is that word? Oh, there goes Spellcheck. Nope, it's not. Oh well) stop you from reading it, though! Now, about the parts I liked: It was very action-packed, and I didn't want to quit turning the pages. I also really enjoyed Charlotte, the main character, because of her personality and character. The same with Zee, another main character. Also, Anne Ursu is seriously an AMAZING author. Her sentences sometimes made me laugh out loud, they were so incredibly awesomely written. So, even if The Shadow Thieves was a tad too scary for my taste, it definitely wins points for its creativity, characters and overall I would award this book...a... wait, I forgot to mention one more thing! The Shadow Thieves is part of a series (maybe a trilogy? not sure) and I can't wait to dive into the second one. Hopefully it's not as scary. Okay, NOW I award this book...4.5 STARS!!!
Thanks for reading! Until next time...
